Hayden Hast Surgery Update

Stevens quarterback Hayden Hast limped into his first period Personal Finance class this morning on crutches, then made the rounds to AP Physics and AP Calculus to pick up his homework. Then he took the day off.

Well…not really “off” off. Not Ferris Bueller off.

Sometime around 3:00 pm Hayden went into pre-op. Orthopedic surgeon Stuart Fromm arthroscopically scoped his knee at 4:00, and at 5:00 Hayden’s mother, Ann, called InsideDakotaSports with a huge sigh of relief. “After we talked to Dr. Fromm, we were doing high fives!”

All weekend Hayden, his family, friends, and teammates, waited nervously to find out whether the field general of the Stevens football team would ever play football again. Or, would he be done for the season. Or, (eyes closed and fingers crossed) maybe he had a fighting chance to be back on the field for state payoffs in early November.

“The ligaments are fine.” Ann Hast reported. “Dr. Fromm scrapped off the damaged cartilage. They didn’t have to do a graft. Tonight they want him to start moving his knee. And as soon as the doctors and trainers allow, he’ll start conditioning himself to get back on the field. It could be three weeks.”

At 8:00, still groggy from the anesthetics, Hayden was home starring at his homework. The Vicodine was beginning to set in. He’ll take tomorrow off, and be back in school Wednesday. I ask him if it is too optimistic, too unrealistic, to think he might take the field in the State playoffs. “No, it’s not unrealistic. I might even be ready for Central.”
